Last night we had dinner with friends at their home. I was looking at one of their Sunset Gardening Books, and was reminded of one of my favorite finds. I came across this Sunset Vegetable Garden Book in a Bremerton thrift store a few years ago. The book itself is great, published in 1943, with good information. But what I found inside the book really made it special: An old black and white photograph of a woman standing in front of a farm house. Strong hands, a simple dress, and a slight grin. I assume (and hope) that the book once belonged to her, because there is also a penciled list of vegetables on one of the first pages. Who was this woman? Did she live in the area? What events lead to her book and photo coming into my hands? Every now and then I take out her picture and wonder these things.
