I am thoroughly embarrassed to admit that I viewed the film before I picked up the book. 
But I recently read a wonderful tribute to the novel in Readers Digest, which gave me good reason to obtain a copy from the library. The author demonstrates what a fine art writing can be. Every word well chosen and well placed. A pity that I did not read it earlier in life, but I am glad to savor it now.
