Today I finished reading The Collector - by Jack Nisbet. It chronicles the travels and adventures of David Douglas (of whom the Douglas fir is named) as he searched for plants in our region of the world between 1825 and 1834. From sailing around the Horn to taking canoe trips with the Natives, David did it all as he collected and identified plants for the London Horticultural Society. Might I add that as I read of his adventures, I felt great envy for his job?
